Challenge information

Here’s the serious bit as we want everyone to have fun, but stay safe.

Everyone taking part in the Ports of Jersey Runway Challenge 21 does so entirely at their own risk. It’s your responsibility to plan safely for your own challenge. Ports of Jersey, other event partners, sponsors and any benefitting charity cannot be held liable for any injury or any financial loss incurred through participating in this virtual challenge.

We strongly encourage everyone to consider the following guidance before participating.

Safety guidance for participating on land

  • Plan your challenge courses safely.
  • Where feasible, you should plan to use courses that avoid vehicular traffic and instead consider courses that are on footpaths, trails, cycle tracks, running tracks or other areas that are free from vehicular traffic.
  • You should advise family members or friends when and where you are taking on your challenge. whenever possible, take a mobile phone with you.
  • If participating at night, we strongly recommend that you wear bright reflective clothing and use suitable lights for running or cycling.
  • All cyclists must wear suitable helmets whilst taking part in this challenge.
  • If you intend to listen to music whilst participating, we strongly recommend that you do not use ‘in ear’ or ‘over ear’ headphones. Instead, we recommend that you use bone-conduction headphones that sit away from the ear and allow you to listen to music and hear other surrounding noises.
  • Junior participants MUST be under parent/guardian supervision at all times!
  • We advise junior participants do not run, walk or cycle on public roads or areas and instead choose a route which is quiet and safe.

Safety guidance for participating on water

  • Plan your challenge courses safely.
  • You should use courses that run parallel (or at least near) to the shoreline, so that you remain within the sight of the shore.
  • You should advise family members or friends when and where you are taking on your challenge.
  • Swimmers are strongly advised to tow a brightly coloured swim float.
  • If taking part on boards, you should carry a VHF marine radio or mobile phone (in a waterproof pouch with lanyard attached to your PFD) which is accessible and useable at all times on the water.
  • If using a board, you should wear a personal flotation device (PFD) and bright reflective clothing.
  • If any more experienced participants decide to use a course further away from the coastline, then we strongly recommend that you carry a flare (day-smoke or laser flare or laser strobe) to assist any rescuer pinpoint your position.
  • We strongly advise you not to listen to music when you’re in or on the water.
