Healing Waves offers Ocean Therapy through guided surf, paddle and flowrider sessions. 

We aim to be as inclusive as possible to assist individuals in the ocean if that is their wish. Healing Waves continues to provide sessions to 200 residents, as well as visitors to the Island with a variety of additional needs, varying from those with profound complex needs, wheelchair users, to those with diagnoses of autism and ADHD to name just a few.

Plans for the future:

Healing Waves are looking to create an adaptive surf centre that will give the charity a much-needed home and dry space to run sessions from, store large quantities of specialist equipment and deliver training to our volunteer team.  For our Healing Waves service users (athletes) and their families it will be a safe space to meet, change and sign-in to sessions whilst giving all a sense of belonging and empowerment.

In 2020 HW delivered session’s everyday throughout the school holidays.  To keep up with increased demands HW is in desperate need for a base to run its services from and store its specialist equipment to reduce the need for double handling. 

Once created we will be looking to involve our athletes in the whole process from the choosing of their equipment, set up and finally wash down at the end of each session. This in turn should increase their well-being and feeling of empowerment by sharing responsibilities whilst becoming more independent.

An education area will be utilised to deliver bespoke water safety awareness for athletes at their level which will hopefully increase their understanding of the ocean. This centre will ultimately provide a safe space to reflect upon each session and socialise over a warm drink, especially during adverse weather in colder months.  Our centre will house specialist changing rooms as we recognise beachside changing facilities are something that has been much needed on island for some time now, ensuring that any individual with additional need can have the privacy, comfort and dignity they deserve when changing.
